Rare Disease Day is a global initiative to raise awareness and generate support for everyone who is on a rare medical journey. It takes place on the last day of February, which this year is February 28th.

Though Rare Disease Day is patient-led, everyone—including individuals, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, industry representatives, and the general public—can participate in raising awareness and taking action for this vulnerable population in urgent need of attention.

Rare Disease Day is a global initiative to raise awareness and generate support for everyone who is on a rare medical journey. It takes place on the last day of February, which this year is February 28th.

Though Rare Disease Day is patient-led, everyone—including individuals, families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, industry representatives, and the general public—can participate in raising awareness and taking action for this vulnerable population in urgent need of attention.

💜 Ellie is 15 months old and the sunshine of her parents’ lives. She loves giraffes, being in the water, strawberries, and all music. She was born with an extremely rare genetic condition called HNRNPU, but wasn’t diagnosed until she was 13 months old following a very scary 4 month period of seizures that caused her to stop breathing completely. Ellie also has hypotonia, strabismus, and developmental delay as a result of her condition. She has been in physical therapy and feeding/speech therapy with Early Intervention since she was 7 months old. She is followed by 7 specialists and she sleeps with a hospital provided monitor every night that will alarm and alert her parents if she stops breathing or if her heart stops in her sleep. Having the monitor has provided some peace of mind to her parents, but they are still living in a near constant state of fear, just bracing themselves for the next seizure and next hospital stay. Ellie is still too young to know exactly how the condition will affect her continued development as she gets older, but there is a lot of fear and worry for her parents in those unknowns too. If a treatment were available it would be a huge help toward alleviating these stressors and anxieties, while ensuring a better future for Ellie. Her family is very concerned about her development as she ages, which is why finding a treatment now is so critical.

Epilepsy is very prevalent in individuals with HNRNPU with approximately 95% of patients experiencing seizures. While some treatment options may work, there is no cure for epilepsy.

Did you know…? The choice of purple or lavender to symbolize epilepsy awareness has historical roots and practical associations. Both colors have been linked to epilepsy awareness since ancient times. Vincent Van Gogh reportedly used lavender to ease his seizures, painting with it during the onset of seizures to potentially mitigate their severity. Additionally, the scent of lavender has been reported by many as beneficial in managing seizures due to the calming effect. Dr. Christopher Ricupero is an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Ricupero received his PhD in Neuroscience and the central theme to his research is neurodevelopment. He has a special interest in rare neurological and neurogenetic disorders within the HNRNP family. He is currently investigating the underlying mechanisms of HNRNP-related neurodevelopmental disorders by modeling the disorders in a dish using patient specific stem cells and derived neurons. He is also active in the development of therapeutics using gene targeting approaches. Dr. Ricupero is a Scientific Advisory Board member of the HNRNP Family Foundation and member of the Consortium on Neurodevelopmental Studies of Autism Spectrum and Related Disorders.
